Afenifere Spokesman,Yinka Odumakin Passes On

The National Publicity Secretary of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin is dead.
He died at the intensive care unit of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a brief illness.
His passing was confirmed by close associates
within the Afenifere,as well as by his wife, Joe Okei-Odumakin,an equally strong human right activist.
In a statement she made in a press release,she said,

A PART OF ME IS GONE!
With gratitude to the Supreme Being for a life well spent, I announce the passing on of my beloved husband, Comrade Yinka Odumakin to the great beyond after a brief illness.
The sad event happened this morning (Saturday, 3/4/2021) at the intensive care unit of LASUTH, where he was being managed for respiratory issues due to complications from COVID-19 ,which he had recovered from about a week ago.
I appreciate the outpouring of grief and sympathy from home and abroad as I mourn my irreplaceable soulmate. I urge us all to remain steadfast in the cause of the masses to which he dedicated his life.”
She told Punch Newspaper that,”he fought hard at the intensive care unit. Pray for me to survive this. My love is gone.
“He was OK before. Even on March 10, he was still attending meetings. He was recovering yesterday but he died this morning. I am at the intensive care unit. A part of me is gone”.
Until his death,Yinka Odumakin was a renowned human rights activist,well known for strongly criticizing the present Buhari-led government.
He was actively involved in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO),the group that fought the regime of General Sani Abacha after the annulment of June 12, 1993 election.
He was also one of the spokespersons of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF), the body representing ethnic nationalities in the South-West, South-South, South-East, and the Middle Belt.
Odumakin equally didn’t hold back on his opinion on the activities of the yoruba security organisation named Amotekun,describing them as criminals,having deviated from protecting yorubas for which reason it was set up,judging from some of the activities they were reported to have carried out.
Since the news of his death was announced,Nigerians from all parts of the country,especially within the political circle have been reacting to the sad news,as several tributes have flooded social media about Yinka Odumakin and the impact he made as well as the vacuum he has created with his passing.No doubt, his impact in the south west will be greatly missed.
His wife said burial arrangement will be made public in due course.
