A new Oniru of Iruland has emerged, and he is Gbolahan Lawal, the Lagos Commissioner For Agriculture, who resigned his position so as to prepare for the coronation. His emergence brings to an end the tussle for the vacant stool of the Oniru of Iru kingdom in Lagos, following the death of the last Oniru, his Royal Highness, Idowu Abiodun Oniru. But the emergence of Lawal on Thursday is hinged on the power play that interfered in the process of selection to impose him as the prefered candidate to ascend the throne.
Since last year, the race for who becomes the next Oniru of Iru Land has been on and a fierce one too between Aremo Segun Oniru, the eldest son of the immediate past Oba Oniru from the Akiogun Ruling House and Hakeem Ajasa, from Abisogun Ruling House and a former Chief Security Officer of the current Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Sources said that after several consultations, the kingmakers in the Abisogun Ruling House voted unanimously for Ajasa as their preferred candidate to become the Oniru of Iru Kingdom,to the chagrin of Aremo Segun Oniru, who insisted he is the rightful person to take over from his late father.
A close associate of the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and a former commissioner in the state under the Raji Fashola Administration,Segun Oniru is however not a favorite of some High Chiefs in the state, who are uncomfortable with his closeness to those in power in the state and who may likely use it to influence his taking over the vacant throne. Many of them alleged that this was the reason the announcement of a new king voted for by the kingmakers was delayed.
But Segun Oniru conceded the race to Hakeem Ajasa, early in the year.An official announcement of the new Oba by the State Government was been expected that never came, then came the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic that helped put a hold on the announcement.
Sources alleged that a twist soon happened when Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu reached out to Hakeem Ajasa for a familiarization meeting.
And few days after the meeting, news filtered that Tinubu was opposed to Hakeem Ajasa’s candidacy as the next Oniru and mandated the Baales and Chiefs of the Abisogun ruling house to nominate a new candidate.
That opposition by Tinubu, sources said left to the opening for his former, Aide-De-Camp and current Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos, Prince Gbolahan Lawal to be nominated, though his ancestral links with Iruland is from his maternal side.
Meanwhile, the Baales and Chiefs from the Abisogun Ruling House, are said to be opposed to the imposition of Lawal on them.
Gbolan Lawal is a three time Commissioner, having served as Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives under Babatunde Fashola administration from 2011-2015; Commissioner for Housing under Akinwunmi Ambode from 2015-2019 and now Commissioner for Agriculture under Babajide Sanwo-Olu,the position he resigned from to ascend the throne of Oniru.
